Police in Birmingham reported the arrest of a 27-year-old mother on Sept. 22 after accusing her of desecrating her child’s corpse. Alabama authorities have charged the woman with abuse of a corpse after the body of her 4-month-old child was discovered burned. She is being held against a $250,000 bond. It’s not clear if the woman has retained criminal defense representation, though an attorney would be provided for her by the court if she cannot afford to hire one on her own.
There are a number of unanswered questions surrounding this tragedy. So far, the mother has not been accused of the child’s death, which is certainly an important fact. However, she has been accused of placing the body of her deceased infant in a bag, which she then allegedly set on fire. Medical authorities are still investigating the cause of the child’s death, and it appears that there is quite a bit more to this incident than has as yet been made public
The woman was booked into Jefferson County Jail on the felony charge. If she is found guilty, she could face prison time and other consequences. The results of the autopsy may shed more light on what occurred. In the meantime, the presumption of innocence that attaches to any person accused of a crime may be particularly important here.
This is why it will be so important for her to have criminal defense representation when she faces an Alabama court. An attorney can help in connection with the charge already pending and also protect her interests with regard to any ongoing investigation. A seasoned lawyer can help slow down the proceedings to prevent a rush to judgment while also ensuring that the rights of the accused are upheld at every stage of the proceedings.
