Alabama teen facing murder charges

An 18-year-old male will be charged with capital murder after charges against him were upgraded by authorities. Alabama police in Tuskegee confirmed the arrest of the man, who was initially charged with attempted murder. If he is found guilty, he could face years in prison, but for the moment, police are still asking for the support of the community in determining the exact series of events. No word yet as to whether the accused man has retained criminal defense representation.

The alleged details of the incident

According to the report, police responded to reports of a shooting. When they arrived on the scene, they found that a 4-year-old child in a nearby apartment had been struck by a stray bullet. The child was taken to a local children’s hospital in Birmingham but succumbed to his injuries on Feb. 15. Police say they do not believe the child’s apartment was the target of the shooting, which took place in the parking lot of the complex where the boy and his family lived.

The 18-year-old who was initially arrested as part of the shooting faced charges of attempted murder and firing a firearm into an occupied building, but after the child died, the charge was upgraded to capital murder. The 18-year-old is being held in a Macon County jail ahead of a trial date, which has not yet been announced publicly. Police are offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with additional information about the shootout.

What happens from here?

While the death of the child in this case is a tragic accident, the fact remains that someone discharged a firearm that killed him. Whether that was the fault of the accused man or not will be determined in an Alabama criminal court, where he will be represented by a criminal defense attorney. This attorney’s job is to carefully review all the facts of the case to support his or her client’s innocence. It is the purview of Alabama prosecutors to provide evidence beyond reasonable doubt of the man’s involvement in the shooting if he is to be convicted on these serious charges.
