Police in Alabama are currently investigating a domestic violence incident that resulted in the arrest of a Prattville man. As the victim in this case did not survive, the accused is now facing murder charges, which carry severe penalties if prosecuting attorneys can achieve a conviction. With this man’s entire future on the line, how he approaches this situation matters.
What happened?
On Aug. 13, Prattville police responded to a domestic disturbance. When they arrived on the scene, they found a girl unconscious with serious injuries to her face and head. Emergency medical responders transported her to a medical facility for treatment. Sadly, the victim experienced a significant brain bleed and swelling, which resulted in brain death. She was removed from life-support on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
The accused
The accused is a 58-year-old male who is said to be the victim’s stepfather. He was initially charged with domestic assault, but the charge has since changed to murder. He is being held in police custody. Bail was set at $250,000.
Defense
According to Alabama laws, the accused in this case is looking at years behind bars, possibly life — among other penalties. Defending himself will not prove an easy task, but building a defense is crucial. An experienced criminal defense attorney can help this gentleman devise a defense strategy that will allow him to pursue the best possible outcome — whether that be a case dismissal, a reduction in charges, alternative sentencing or minimizing prison time.
